[Chapter 004] Lu YunFei: I think my desk mate wants me to die!
Six hours earlier, Lu YunFei despaired over his English score of 74 marks. Six minutes ago, Lu YunFei despaired over how he turned into a Tmall Genie. Now, Lu YunFei felt true despair.
He actually became Bian JinYuan’s Tmall Genie!
Bian JinYuan obviously didn’t understand why his didi (younger brother) asked him this question. He bent down to place himself at eye level with his didi and asked gently, “Disintegrated?”
Shuang Shuang nodded and raised his hand to point at the Tmall Genie, “It said that.”
Bian JinYuan looked at the Tmall Genie nearby and thought for a bit. He remembered that this Tmall Genie had said in the shop, “This question is too difficult, it’s so difficult that I’ve disintegrated.” He smiled and replied to his didi, “That’s because it doesn’t understand what you said. Shuang Shuang, try asking it another question.”
Shuang Shuang understood and nodded. He looked at his Tmall Genie once again and suddenly thought of something, asking, “Are you hungry?”
After he said that, he looked at his gege, “Gege, is it also a cat#? Does it want to eat fish?”
Bian JinYuan rubbed his head, “It’s not a cat, and it doesn’t eat fish. It won’t get hungry. It’s just like the fan in our house.”
“Oh,” Shuang Shuang nodded, “But the fan doesn’t talk.”
“So does Shuang Shuang find it fun?”
Shuang Shuang’s eyes brightened as he vigorously nodded, “It’s fun.”
Bian JinYuan saw his reaction, and his eyes got gentler.
Lu YunFei looked at the brothers in front of him in shock. He thought that he had probably gone blind. Is this still the Bian JinYuan that he knows? The Bian JinYuan who is indifferent, untalkative, and loves to ignore people?
This is probably a fake, Lu YunFei couldn’t help but complain. He was actually someone who could smile and talk so gently? Who would believe that!
Bian Jie saw that he had come back, and quickly took out the food that they had kept for him to heat them up in the bowls. Shuang Shuang obediently went to wash his face on his own. Bian JinYuan put down his school bag and sat on the sofa, taking out his pencil case and sheets of paper.
“Gege are you washing your face?” Shuang Shuang raised the towel in his hand.
“Gege’s not washing, Shuang Shuang wash your face alone.”
Bian JinYuan watched as his didi put the towel back on the shelf. He walked over to refresh the hot water and helped him to wash his feet.
Shuang Shuang washed his feet quickly, his fair and tender feet swished twice before he removed them from the tub. Bian JinYuan helped him to dry off his feet, and washed his own feet as well before throwing the water away.
He let Shuang Shuang play with the Tmall Genie while he sat on the sofa. He laid the loose paper on the coffee table and took out a gel pen to start working on them.
Lu YunFei tried to stretch his neck to see what he was writing. What did he need to use loose paper sheets for instead of an exercise book? Unfortunately he was now a Tmall Genie, and all his stretching was in vain.
Shuang Shuang rubbed his head and softly asked him, “Can you tell stories?”
Didi, if you ask me questions without calling for the Tmall Genie, I won’t be activated, Lu YunFei thought.
However he still opened his mouth, “Yes.”
He didn’t expect that the room would be filled with the sound of his voice, “Yes.”
Wow! Looks like his artificial intelligence is way better than a Tmall Genie’s. He’d be activated even if he wasn’t prompted with “Tmall Genie”.
At this, Shuang Shuang immediately dragged a small stool to sit in front of him, “Then please tell me a story.”
Lu YunFei: …
Lu YunFei looked at Bian JinYuan who was writing studiously. So he became a Tmall Genie just to help Bian JinYuan look after kids? That’s too unfair!
Lu YunFei felt that he should remain silent. However the little kid in front of him was looking at him with expectant eyes. Bian JinYuan is handsome, and his didi naturally wasn’t bad-looking either. The little kid had fair skin and large eyes, like a carved porcelain doll. It was just that this doll was wearing a set of pyjamas that had been washed so often that the pattern had already faded. He looked like a little prince who was cast into poverty.
What kind of stories did a little boy his age like? Lu YunFei thought about it but couldn’t think of anything at the moment. In the end, he told a story that all children would have heard of before, the story of Snow White.
Bian JinYuan wrote his draft for an article which he needed to submit to the magazine club while he listened to the story of Snow White. As the story ended, he had also just finished writing his last sentence.
“Tmall Genie,” Bian JinYuan said.
Lu YunFei was immediately alert, “I’m here.”
“Tell this story again in English.”
Lu YunFei: …
What the fuck world was this!!! He’d already turned into a Tmall Genie!!! Why did he still have to suffer under the hands of the terror that is English!!!
# If anyone remembered that note I made in Chapter 2, Tmall is the equivalent of Amazon in China. Tmall is made up of the words 天猫 (Tiān Māo), which was chosen because it sounds close enough to how Tmall (T Mall) is pronounced using Chinese words. Tian Mao translates literally to ‘Sky Cat’. As such, Shuang Shuang thought that it’s a cat too.
In my opinion, there are Chinese words that do get closer to how one would pronounce Tmall (e.g. Ti Mo, Ti Mao?), but I think Tmall also wanted to pick something that’s cute and with good feng shui, and what better than the imagery of a cat from the heavens, or associations to the maneki neko for portents of wealth in this shopping platform? So I guess they struck a balance between having an accurate reading and branding. This paragraph is all my conjecture, I just find it interesting to wonder about things like this sometimes.
